After Representative Hakeem Jeffries finished his visit to the infamous ICE detention center at Delaney Hall in New Jersey and witnessed the terrible conditions there, he angered the Trump administration by demanding its immediate shutdown.
In response, the Trump administration sarcastically tweeted at Jeffries, saying, “A reminder for @RepJeffries. 1) DHS doesn’t create laws, Congress does. We don’t choose which laws to enforce—and you shouldn’t either as a ‘lawmaker.’ 2) Entering the United States illegally is a crime. EVERYONE held in Delaney Hall broke the law. U.S. Code, Title 8, Section 1325. This is a detention center—we do not offer luxury accommodations.
What we do provide are basic needs like beds, clean water, healthcare, and three meals a day until they go HOME.” The real problem is that DHS is NOT providing sufficient basic necessities, but let’s move on.
Leader Jeffries wasn’t going to let this dismissive response gloss over the serious abuse faced by detainees, so he shot back with a “reminder” of his own: “A reminder for @DHSgov: There is no time limit for killing American citizens in cold blood. Showing a complete lack of care for human life is a serious crime under federal law.
The American people know that ICE is failing. We will not forget that Trump’s ICE agents killed two innocent Americans. We will not forget the 50 innocent immigrants who have died in Trump’s detention centers.
We will not forget the terrible abuse and neglect that Trump has caused to people who came here seeking a better life and the hope of the American Dream.”
