After wrapping up a high-profile state visit to a rival global power, one might assume the U.S. president would be focused on diplomacy, trade, or security outcomes.
Instead, Donald Trump appeared preoccupied with something far more personal.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump shared a photo of himself alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping outside a large building and used the moment to promote a domestic construction project.
“China has a Ballroom, and so should the U.S.A.! It’s under construction, ahead of schedule, and will be the finest facility of its kind anywhere in the U.S.A. Thank you for all the support I have been given in getting this project going. Scheduled opening will be around September of 2028. The man I am walking with is President Xi, of China, one of the World’s Great Leaders! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
The claim quickly drew attention for its framing of international competition in unusually symbolic terms, with Trump presenting the existence of a Chinese ballroom as justification for a major new construction project at home.
Critics were quick to point out that the United States already has numerous large-scale event venues and historic ceremonial halls, including government-owned facilities near the White House capable of hosting major state functions.
The contrast between global diplomacy and domestic branding once again highlighted Trump’s tendency to blend presidential messaging with personal project promotion, even during moments of international significance.
