A federal appeals court in New York has refused President Donald Trump’s request to have his case reviewed again. This decision is another blow to Trump in a long-running legal case. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided not to rehear the case, keeping the 2024 jury’s decision standing, which ordered Trump to pay $83 million to writer E. Jean Carroll.
In the court’s ruling, it was stated that Trump’s legal arguments were submitted too late.
Judge Denny Chin, who wrote the opinion, said, “No other defendant would be allowed to replace the United States as the defendant 15 months after the trial and the judgment was entered. The Court correctly chose not to revisit this issue with the full court.”
Trump wanted to replace the United States as the defendant, claiming his statements were part of his official duties as president.
He also claimed he had presidential immunity. However, the court rejected both arguments, saying they were not presented on time.
This case started in 2019.
A previous jury had awarded Carroll $5 million, finding Trump responsible for sexual abuse and defamation. The appeals court had already rejected Trump’s attempts to overturn that verdict.
Carroll testified that Trump’s denials led to years of harassment and safety threats.
The jury in the 2024 trial found that Trump’s statements harmed her reputation and caused long-term emotional distress.
In a statement, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said, “We are glad the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit rejected Trump’s request for a rehearing.
E. Jean Carroll is eager for this case, which started in 2019, to end so she can finally get justice.”
Trump denies the allegations and continues to fight the rulings against him.
His legal team hasn’t said whether they’ll appeal again after this decision.
With this ruling, Trump’s options are limited as the case moves towards a final resolution.
For Carroll, this decision brings her one step closer to getting the judgment enforced after years of legal battles.
