Donald Trump said that NATO has done “nothing” for America while criticizing and looking down on other countries for how they run their own businesses.
One Australian journalist apparently heard enough.
This strong response has been around for months, but it’s getting attention again and is still a really powerful read.
Some of the numbers have changed since it was first written, but the main point hasn’t:
“Look,
You run a country where hundreds of thousands of homeless people will sleep in shelters or on the streets tonight.
A country where millions of adults can’t come up with $400 for an unexpected expense.
A country where women have been denied emergency pregnancy care because doctors are scared of breaking abortion laws.
You jail more of your own citizens than almost any country in the world.
In the land of the free, millions of people are behind bars, hundreds of thousands of them waiting for trial.
Your kids do drills for school shootings between math and English classes.
Your federal minimum wage hasn’t gone up since 2009.
Your teachers work two jobs, your veterans sleep under bridges, and your government spends a lot of money on wars overseas.
And you call Greenland badly run?
Greenland has universal healthcare.
Free education. No one there goes bankrupt because of illness.
‘NATO wasn’t there when we needed them.’
When exactly was that, champ?
September 11?
Because NATO used Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU.
Soldiers from many countries went, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU.
Australia wasn’t even in NATO, and we still showed up.
For twenty years.
And then you left at 2 a.m.
without telling anyone and left everyone else to clean up the mess.
You don’t care that a big nation is being terrorized by your friend, and you haven’t shown it a single ounce of sympathy.
So maybe before calling other countries badly run, take a look at your own backyard, you aluminum siding salesman with a spray tan.”
