It’s uncommon for a world leader to openly talk about how the world actually works. This speech will be remembered in history.
Carney spoke at the Davos World Economic Forum, saying: “We knew the story of the international rules-based order wasn’t entirely true.
The strongest nations often ignored the rules when it suited them, and trade rules were applied unevenly. International law was enforced differently depending on who was accused or who was the victim.”
He added, “This idea was useful, and American leadership helped provide public goods, safe sea routes, a stable financial system, shared security, and support for resolving conflicts.
So we put up a sign, followed the routines, and mostly avoided pointing out the differences between what was said and what was actually happening. But this deal is no longer working.”
Carney said, “Let me be clear: we are in the middle of a break, not a change.
Over the past 20 years, a series of crises in finance, health, energy, and global politics have shown the dangers of extreme global connection.”
More recently, major powers have started using economic integration as a tool, he said, clearly referring to Trump. “
Tariffs as leverage. Financial systems as a way to control. Supply chains as weaknesses to take advantage of. You can’t keep pretending that integration leads to mutual benefit when it’s actually causing subordination.”
Carney’s view gives a honest look at the order created after World War II.
Western countries, led by the U.S., built a complex network of global systems that favored their own interests, often at the cost of developing nations. It was a flawed system that still brought peace, stability, and prosperity to those it was meant to help.
He said, “The international organizations that middle powers have counted on, like the WTO, the U.N., and COP, are under attack.”
“As a result, many countries are reaching the same conclusion: they need more control over energy, food, key materials, finance, and supply chains,” he continued.
“This makes sense. A country that can’t feed, fuel, or defend itself has few choices. When the rules no longer protect you, you have to protect yourself.”
Carney was pointing out a hard truth that MAGA refuses to admit.
Even though Trump believes otherwise, European nations didn’t just accept a vassal status out of fear of the U.S. They followed the system the U.S. had built because it directly benefited them. Now that Trump is removing those benefits, they are beginning to move away from the U.S. economically and strategically. Canada’s recent big trade deal with China proves this.
The issue is that Donald Trump and his supporters don’t realize the system they’re destroying also helps them.
They take for granted the U.S. dollar’s role as the world’s main currency. Once these hidden supports start failing, the quality of life in the U.S. will drop.
Carney continued, “Let’s be clear about where this is leading.
A world of isolated nations will be poorer, more unstable, and less sustainable. There’s another truth. If major powers give up on rules and values and just chase power and self-interest, the advantages of transactional relationships will be harder to achieve.”
“Hegemons can’t keep using their relationships for profit forever.
Allies will spread their risks, build up their options to gain sovereignty. Sovereignty used to be based on rules, but it will increasingly depend on the ability to withstand pressure.”
There’s no going back.
Because of Trump’s ignorance, small-mindedness, and arrogance, America has been thrown into a dangerous new situation. The rest of the world will never trust the U.S. the same way again. But if we can remove Trump and bring in Democrats, we can start fixing some of the damage.
The future is uncertain, but one thing is certain: our country will only survive if Democrats are in charge.
