Donald Trump tried to shut down CNN’s Kaitlan Collins with a barrage of personal insults after she challenged his decision to waive sanctions against Russia.
But hours later, Collins returned to television with something the president hadn’t addressed: his own preferred Senate candidate disagreed with his decision.
The confrontation unfolded Wednesday outside the White House as Trump prepared to travel to South Carolina for a campaign rally supporting Republican Sen. Darline Graham.
Collins pressed the president over his decision to waive sanctions against Russia while his administration negotiated the release of American detainee Stephen Hubbard.
Trump argued that imposing sanctions during delicate negotiations would have jeopardized Hubbard’s freedom and complicated efforts to reach a peace agreement involving Russia and Ukraine.
But Collins wanted to know whether suspending those sanctions amounted to giving Moscow something in exchange.
“So, you did give him something in exchange for the release?” she asked.
Trump responded by attacking her and CNN.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. You’re a dummy,” he said.
When Collins continued pressing the issue, Trump escalated.
“You’re a low-IQ person. You’re a dummy, and you work for CNN.”
The president continued defending his negotiations, insisting that sanctions would have undermined efforts to bring Hubbard home.
But the story didn’t end outside the White House.
That evening, on CNN’s The Source, Collins revisited the exchange and played a clip of Darline Graham — the Republican senator Trump had traveled to South Carolina to support.
Graham, who succeeded her late brother Lindsey Graham in the Senate, had taken a noticeably different position on Russia.
“Personally, I would choose to keep the pressure on Russia to end the war and get the gas prices down because, I don’t trust Putin and I don’t trust Russia,” Graham said.
Collins highlighted the contradiction.
“Of course, the reality is, even the candidate that the President is campaigning for tonight has disagreed with his decision to lift those Russia sanctions.”
That was the striking twist.
Trump had insulted a journalist for questioning his Russia policy, while the Republican candidate he was actively campaigning for had publicly advocated maintaining pressure on Moscow.
Collins also reminded viewers that Trump had encouraged Graham to seek the Senate seat previously held by her brother.
Lindsey Graham had been a prominent advocate of tougher measures against Russia, arguing that easing economic pressure would reward Vladimir Putin for his invasion of Ukraine.
The disagreement does not establish that Trump traded sanctions relief for Hubbard’s release. The president maintained that suspending the sanctions was necessary to protect sensitive negotiations, and no confirmed agreement establishing such an exchange has been disclosed.
But Collins’ report raised a separate political question: Why was Trump attacking a journalist for scrutinizing a decision that even his own endorsed candidate had questioned?
Rather than respond to the substance of Collins’ reporting, Trump had repeatedly questioned her intelligence.
Hours later, she let his own candidate’s words speak for themselves.
And that made the president’s personal attack look considerably less effective.
