Donald Trump announced Friday that he is banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House “effective immediately,” dramatically escalating his long-running confrontation with news organizations whose coverage he dislikes.
And according to Trump, those three outlets may only be the beginning.
The president made the announcement on Truth Social, accusing CNN, MS NOW and Politico of repeatedly publishing what he calls “fake news.”
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW… and Politico… from the White House as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” Trump wrote.
He then broadened his attack on the press.
“Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” Trump wrote.
Then came the part suggesting Friday’s announcement may not be the end of it.
“Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
Trump did not identify which other news organizations he might target.
He also did not immediately explain exactly how the newly announced ban would work.
That distinction is important.
Shortly after Trump posted his announcement, CNN reporter Brian Stelter said on air that the network’s team remained inside the White House and was continuing to work as it would on a normal Friday afternoon.
So while Trump has publicly declared the three organizations banned, the full scope and practical enforcement of that order remained unclear immediately after his announcement.
But targeting CNN in particular could create a significant problem for White House coverage.
CNN has traditionally been part of the television network pool that follows the president and provides independent coverage of presidential events to news organizations and the public.
Removing a major network from that system would therefore have implications extending beyond a dispute between Trump and CNN.
The announcement also comes against the backdrop of Trump’s increasingly bitter battles with news organizations during his second term.
Last year, the administration restricted Associated Press journalists from certain presidential events after the AP refused to adopt Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America” terminology for the Gulf of Mexico.
The Associated Press sued.
That legal battle is still ongoing.
Trump has also repeatedly attacked individual reporters and news organizations over coverage he considers unfair, and has called for action against broadcasters over programming and commentary he dislikes.
Friday’s announcement takes that confrontation in a new direction by targeting three major national news organizations simultaneously.
It also raises an obvious constitutional question.
The First Amendment protects freedom of speech and freedom of the press, and previous attempts by presidential administrations to revoke or restrict individual reporters’ White House credentials have faced legal challenges.
In 2019, for example, a federal judge ordered the White House to restore the credential of reporter Brian Karem after it had been suspended.
Now another potentially significant fight over presidential press access may be developing.
Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone, the ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, quickly condemned Trump’s announcement as censorship.
But the most important unanswered question Friday night was much more immediate:
What does Trump mean by “banned”?
His announcement offered no detailed rules explaining whether reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico would lose White House credentials altogether, whether they would be excluded from specific presidential events, or whether their participation in press pools would be restricted.
Axios reported shortly afterward that the scope of the order remained unclear.
That means the situation could change quickly.
What is already clear is that Trump has publicly declared three major American news organizations unwelcome at the White House because of coverage he says is false.
And he ended his announcement with an unmistakable warning that the list could grow.
“Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
For CNN, MS NOW and Politico, Friday’s announcement may be the beginning of another battle over access to the president.
For the rest of the American press, the bigger question is who Trump intends to target next.
