Barbra Streisand has had enough of Donald Trump’s escalating battle over the Kennedy Center — and now she’s making her feelings known in unmistakable terms.

The legendary singer, actress and filmmaker, who received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008, spoke out Thursday as the fight over the future of one of America’s most important cultural institutions took yet another dramatic turn.

For Streisand, however, this isn’t simply a fight over a building.

She began by reminding Americans why the Kennedy Center carries that name in the first place.

After President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Congress designated the institution as a living memorial to the slain president, whose administration had made support for the arts a prominent part of American public life.

Streisand recalled what it meant when she received the Kennedy Center Honors nearly two decades ago.

“For me, and for so many artists, that honor represented something larger than a career recognition,” she wrote. “It represented a belief in the importance of art to the life of a democracy.”

Then she turned her attention to Trump.

Streisand said it has been “galling and painful to witness” what has happened to the institution, before delivering a much sharper assessment of the battle surrounding the president’s name.

“You can easily imagine my indignation at seeing this revered institution become the subject of such a bitter struggle over one man’s name and unchecked ego,” she wrote.

The timing of her intervention is significant.

Trump has repeatedly pushed to have his name associated with the Kennedy Center, but a federal judge ruled again this week that the institution cannot simply be renamed by its Trump-controlled board. The court concluded that Congress has authority over the official name of the memorial.

Then came another remarkable development.

Shortly after the latest court ruling, the Kennedy Center board voted to close the main building as part of a major renovation project.

That sequence immediately attracted attention — including from Streisand.

“Oddly, when Trump’s name was still on the building, there was no discussion of closing it!” she wrote.

The controversy has only grown since then.

A federal judge has now ordered the administration to provide at least 30 days’ notice before taking steps toward demolishing the Kennedy Center, as litigation over the building’s future continues.

The issue became even more explosive after a photograph circulated showing Trump aboard Air Force One looking at a document on which the words “Kennedy Center DEMOLISHED” appeared to be visible.

The photograph does not, by itself, prove that a final demolition plan has been approved. Trump and officials involved with the Kennedy Center have argued that the building requires extensive renovation, citing serious structural problems and safety concerns.

But the possibility of demolition has become serious enough that a federal court has now imposed a notice requirement before such action could move forward.

And for Streisand, the entire episode appears to represent something much bigger.

Her statement repeatedly returned to the original purpose of the Kennedy Center — a national memorial honoring a president whose name became inseparable from the institution after his assassination.

That history is what makes the current battle so disturbing to her.

Streisand is hardly an outside observer. She is one of the artists whose career was celebrated inside the building, receiving one of its highest honors in 2008.

Now she is watching that same institution become the center of an extraordinary political and legal fight involving Trump, Congress, federal courts and the future of the building itself.

And she ended her message by turning directly to Americans.

Streisand urged voters to remember what is happening when they cast their ballots in the upcoming midterm elections.

The Kennedy Center battle is far from finished. The administration maintains that major changes are necessary to renovate the aging complex, while opponents continue fighting in court over what Trump and his board have the authority to do.

But one thing has clearly changed.

One of the most famous Kennedy Center honorees in American history has now entered the fight.

And Barbra Streisand isn’t treating it as a dispute over construction.

She sees a national memorial caught in what she described as a bitter struggle over “one man’s name and unchecked ego.”
