Jill Biden shared some pretty candid thoughts about one of the toughest and most awkward moments of her time as First Lady. It was the short trip from the White House to the Capitol on Inauguration Day 2025, and she was sitting right next to Melania Trump, who looked really upset and wasn’t saying much.
In her new book, Biden described the uncomfortable ride after the usual pre-inauguration tea.
Melania had been quiet the whole time, still mad because she blamed Joe for the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago. Biden wrote, “I can understand her feelings, because I’ve been through the same kind of search.” He even mentioned how hard it was for him to have agents go through his personal stuff, like his underwear drawer.
The mood was so tense that the inauguration team had to bring in John Bessler, the husband of Senator Amy Klobuchar, to sit with them and help break the silence.
Biden joked that he “must have drawn the shortest of all possible straws.”
Bessler tried to start a conversation by asking Melania about Barron’s studies at NYU.
She just said “NYU” and kept looking out the window. Every time Bessler tried to chat, Melania would steer the conversation back to the weather.
Biden also mentioned that Melania hasn’t shown any grace in their interactions since 2021.
She didn’t come to the traditional inauguration tea in 2021, and she didn’t offer the same courtesy when the Trumps came back to the White House in 2025.
Of course, Joe Biden didn’t personally send the FBI to Mar-a-Lago.
Trump was charged with keeping classified information, which is a big crime, and he might have gone to jail if he hadn’t won re-election.
Melania’s fixate on the invasion of her privacy shows she thinks everything is about her.
She’s just as self-centered as her husband, and that’s saying a lot.
