Rep. Jim McGovern erupted on the House floor Thursday after Republican leadership abruptly canceled a planned vote on a war powers resolution tied to President Donald Trump’s escalating conflict with Iran.
The measure would have required Trump to seek congressional authorization for continued military involvement, pushing back against the president’s repeated claims that he does not need Congress’s approval to continue operations.

Earlier this week, the Senate advanced its own war powers resolution in a rare bipartisan rebuke of Trump’s handling of the conflict.
But in the House, Republican leaders suddenly pulled the scheduled vote after concerns reportedly grew that the resolution could actually pass because of GOP defections and member absences.
According to Politico, House leadership canceled the vote after realizing there was a real possibility Republicans would lose control of the outcome.
That decision triggered a furious confrontation on the House floor.
During a parliamentary inquiry Thursday evening, McGovern demanded answers about why the vote had disappeared from the schedule.
“Mr. Speaker, can you explain to the members of the chamber what is happening with the Iran war powers resolution that was scheduled to be voted on this evening?” McGovern asked.
The chair responded by asking whether McGovern had a parliamentary question.
“Well, that is my parliamentary inquiry,” McGovern shot back. “I just want to know what has happened with the Iran war powers resolution.”
The response from the chair only escalated tensions further.
“The gentleman may consult with your leadership regarding scheduling,” the presiding officer replied.
McGovern then exploded into an angry condemnation that immediately energized Democrats in the chamber.
“Mr. Speaker, further parliamentary inquiry. Are we not voting on it because the American people are sick and tired of this illegal war that is costing tens of billions of dollars?!” McGovern shouted.
“Gas prices are through the roof! People can’t afford — people can’t afford their groceries! Is that why you’re pulling it?! You guys don’t have the guts or the balls to vote on this!”
Democrats erupted into loud cheers and applause as McGovern finished his remarks.
“The House will be in order!” the chair repeatedly shouted while attempting to regain control of the chamber.
The dramatic exchange underscored growing political pressure surrounding Trump’s Iran policy as concerns rise over the economic impact of the conflict, including rising fuel costs and broader fears of deeper U.S. military involvement.
Trump has continued insisting he does not need congressional authorization for military action despite constitutional questions surrounding war powers and increasing bipartisan frustration in Congress.
The House GOP’s decision to avoid the vote entirely is already fueling accusations that Republican leaders feared public accountability more than the resolution itself.
And after Thursday’s eruption on the House floor, the political battle over Trump’s Iran conflict appears far from over.

All I have now is the vote. But you know, I also have neighbors. ALOT of neighbors. We will talk about stupidity, duty, and about the good people who are trying to feed, clothe, educate, and encourage their American children! 💖
