Jamie Raskin is fed up with having a very crazy and unstable person as president. So he’s taking action with the help of 50 other lawmakers who are supporting him.
As the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Raskin introduced a new law on Tuesday.
The law would create a “Commission on Presidential Capacity to Discharge the Powers and Duties of Office.” This 17-person group would be allowed under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to check if Donald Trump is mentally and physically fit to be president.
The reasons Raskin provided for introducing this law paint a disturbing picture of a presidency that’s getting worse.
Trump said he would destroy “an entire civilization” because of a shipping deadline he posted on his social media platform. He posted a picture of himself as Jesus and then claimed he was acting like a doctor. He attacked Pope Leo, who is the first pope from America. He started a war in Iran without asking Congress, which went against the War Powers Act. He almost said secret information about troops at a press conference, and his own military chief had to stop him. He set four different deadlines against Iran and gave up on all of them.
Raskin said, “Public trust in Donald Trump’s ability to do his job has fallen to an all-time low.
We are at a dangerous point, and it’s now a national security issue for Congress to do what it’s supposed to under the 25th Amendment.”
Let’s be honest about the facts.
The 25th Amendment has never been used to take someone out of the presidency. It would require JD Vance and a majority of Trump’s own cabinet to say he’s unfit. That same cabinet paid $35 million for their jobs and has spent months agreeing with almost everything Trump says. If Trump disagreed — which he would, loudly, probably while posting another Jesus picture on Truth Social — then two-thirds of both houses of Congress would have to agree. That’s a higher standard than impeachment.
Raskin knows this law won’t get Trump out of office right away.
That’s not the main point. The point is to force a conversation that the White House doesn’t want to have — about a 79-year-old man who is threatening the collapse of civilization on social media, comparing himself to Jesus, ignoring his own generals, hiding war deaths, and calling his foreign policy “J.D. and Steve and Jared.”
The White House responded to Raskin’s earlier request for a mental health evaluation by saying: “Lightweight Jamie Raskin is a stupid person’s idea of a smart person.”
That’s not the kind of response most people would like to hear: “The president will be happy to take a cognitive test.”
Meanwhile, Republican Rep. Marlin Stutzman of Indiana said Trump is “one of the greatest presidents our country has ever had” and is “making the entire planet safer.”
This is the same planet where Austria, Italy, and Spain have closed their airspace to American warplanes, and allies believe America has “lost its mind.”
There are 50 Democratic co-sponsors, a formal bill, a requirement for a 72-hour medical checkup, and a president who answered questions about his mental health by posting a picture of himself as Jesus.
