Kelly, a retired Navy Captain, wrote on X: “If those words become orders to destroy civilian infrastructure with no real military purpose, it’s hard to see how they would not violate the laws of armed conflict.” He added, “America leads best with strength, discipline, and professionalism. Illegal orders that make civilians suffer would be a major stain on our military and our country.”
Kelly shared his comments along with a screenshot of Trump’s extreme threat on Easter, calling it “Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran.
” Trump then raised his war crime threats this morning by saying Iran’s “whole civilization will die tonight” unless they meet his demands. This is clear nuclear terrorism from a sitting American president.
Senator Kelly wrote again on X: “‘A whole civilization will die tonight’ are words no President of the United States had ever spoken until this morning.”
He said, “Donald Trump’s behavior is out of control and is making Americans less safe. After 25 years in the U.S. Navy, I have never met or served with anyone who completely lacks the qualities of good leadership as Donald Trump does.”
He continued, “If the President takes the actions he has threatened to take, countless Iranian civilians will die.
It will greatly escalate this war, and the United States will be seen as a country without moral or ethical values. That will make Americans less safe right now and put the lives of thousands of service members at risk. The consequences will have a lasting and harmful effect on our nation.”
Kelly concluded, “Trump’s mistakes have brought us to this dangerous situation, but the solution is not to go further.
This must stop.”
Now that Trump has crossed this line, there is no going back.
He started a war of aggression on behalf of Israel, is losing control, and is now threatening mass civilian killings and nuclear destruction in a desperate attempt to win in a fascist way. In one move, Trump has put himself in the category of history’s worst monsters.
Even if he doesn’t follow through on his threats, America’s reputation will never be the same.
The only way forward is for the military to reject these illegal orders, and for Trump and his Cabinet to be tried for war crimes. The survival of our democracy depends on it.
