Last night, the president again made fun of California Governor Gavin Newsom for saying he has a learning disability, just like so many millions of Americans. It was a mean and small-minded act of ableist hate that doesn’t fit for a president or a person.
Jennifer Siebel Newsom made a video responding to Trump’s harsh words about Newsom, and it’s really worth watching.
She said, “I saw Donald Trump’s comments about learning disabilities and my husband, Gavin Newsom, and I honestly had to pause.
Saying someone with dyslexia or any learning difference is less capable of leading or succeeding is really ignorant and offensive. Dyslexia doesn’t mean someone is less smart. In fact, the opposite is true. Learning differences don’t limit someone’s potential. On the contrary, many of the most successful leaders in the world have dyslexia.”
“Every day, Trump says things that make him unfit for office.
He treats our vulnerable communities, our institutions, and even the Constitution with disrespect. And somehow, we’re told to ignore it, act like everything’s fine, and pretend everything is normal. Guess what? It’s not. And we’re tired of it. As someone who grew up in a Republican family, I’m ashamed of the Republican Party for letting this kind of person become the leader of their party.”
“There are millions of kids in this country with learning differences who are already working twice as hard to keep up.
Kids are trying to believe in themselves. I know this first-hand, because some of my kids learn differently. I see the emotions, the stress, the ways they cope, the extra time they spend, and the strength it takes every single day. And I know they’re going to be amazing. Learning differences don’t mean you’re less smart. They don’t mean you can’t do anything. And they sure don’t mean you’re not worth leading. They make you special.”
Honestly, if we’re talking about what makes a leader unfit, let’s talk about that.
A man who’s been convicted of a crime, a man found responsible for sexual abuse, a man known for treating female reporters badly, a man with a history of ruining businesses, a man whose name appears thousands of times in the Epstein files, a man who sends masked extremists to attack black and brown communities and takes kids away from their families.

Everything that Donald Trump stands for is completely unacceptable.”
