I’m really excited to congratulate Mayor-elect Andy Thomson on this huge win. Winning by just 5 votes shows that getting everyone involved and talking to every voter can make a big difference in 2026,” said Nikki Fried, the chair of the Florida Democratic Party. “Andy has always led as a Councilman with honesty, care, and with the community’s best interests in mind. I’m sure he’ll serve as Mayor with the same strong heart and dedication.”
Thomson beat Republican candidate Mike Liebelson with 7,567 votes to Liebelson’s 7,572, a very close margin that shows how important each vote really is.
In the end, every vote truly counts.
The election results were officially confirmed after a machine recount and a manual check of the ballots, which was approved by the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections.
The machine recount first showed Thomson winning by just one vote, but the manual recount increased his lead to five votes.
Thomson is ready to take on his new role as Mayor right away from his current position on the Boca Raton City Council.
He’s also a lawyer, electrical engineer, and a part-time professor at Florida Atlantic University.
“Andy’s election marks the first time in many years that a Democrat has won this position,” said Fried.
“This win shows a clear trend in Florida: Democrats can run and win anywhere — even in Donald Trump’s home state. Floridians are tired of the confusion, corruption, and high costs of everyday things like groceries, gas, and healthcare. They’re choosing leaders like Andy who can bring stability and practical solutions back to their communities.”
“We’re proud of Andy and his work with our Take Back Local program.
By giving candidates resources and support on the ground, the Florida Democratic Party is helping shift the balance in our favor,” she added.
This win is part of a larger trend where Democrats are winning in areas that used to strongly support Republicans across the country.
The Republican Party has never been more divided, and Donald Trump is responsible for that. Inflation is rising sharply, the entire world thinks he’s a pedophile, his hidden immigration agents are killing innocent Americans, and now he’s starting a war with Iran on behalf of Israel. He’s clearly the worst president in history.
“When you work hard and reach out everywhere, you can win anywhere — including here in Florida,” said Ken Martin, the chair of the Democratic National Committee.
Mayor-elect Andy Thomson ran a strong campaign focused on the issues that matter most to Boca Raton voters, like the rising costs of groceries and gas and the healthcare crisis caused by Donald Trump and his allies. This win is another sign to Florida Republicans that voters are sick of their out-of-touch agenda, which is making places like Boca Raton unaffordable.
