Vice President JD Vance, who became a Catholic in 2019, warned Pope Leo XIV about “matters of theology.”
Vance spoke at a TurningPoint USA event at the University of Georgia on Tuesday.
He talked about President Donald Trump’s disagreement with the pope, who has criticized the Trump administration, especially on immigration and the war in Iran.
Last week, the pope tweeted, “God does not bless any conflict.
Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.”
In response, Trump called Leo “WEAK.”
At the event on Tuesday, Vance told the crowd that the pope should be careful when discussing theology.
During the event, Vance was also interrupted by people who questioned U.S. support for Israel.
Vance appeared on Fox News on Monday, where he was asked if he agrees with Trump’s criticism of Leo.
“I think the president has the right to set American foreign policy,” Vance said.
“He also has the right to set American immigration policy. He has to look out for the interests of the United States of America. And that means when the Vatican talks about public policy issues, there will sometimes be agreement and sometimes disagreement.”
