Anti-authoritarianism activist and former Georgia Representative Stacey Abrams warned on Saturday that a senator aligned with the MAGA movement made a worrying statement on television about his upcoming campaign for governor.
Abrams was on MS NOW talking about President Donald Trump’s false claims about widespread voter fraud and the supporters who support his statements — especially Senator Tommy Tuberville.
“Nobody cares about the public,” Abrams said.
“Nobody cares about the country.Nobody cares about America. They just want to be near power.”
She was reacting to comments Tuberville made to Newsmax on Thursday, where he said he had “seen the proof” that a system existed to “pressure” Trump.
“There’s no doubt,” Tuberville said.
“We probably have four or five senators who didn’t win legally.”
Tuberville was referring to reports that had been shared suggesting Trump would say Georgia’s two Democratic U.S.
senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, were not legitimate, as part of his effort to find voter fraud in the state.Experts at the time noted the reports.
MS NOW co-host Eugene Daniels quickly provided the background, then asked a question.
“That rumor didn’t end up being reported,” Daniels said.
“But what does it mean that all the power tools Republicans have seem to be pointing toward the same thing — making people think they can’t trust our elections, and then actually doing something based on that belief?”
That’s when Abrams said Tuberville had made a major mistake in connection with his growing gubernatorial campaign.
“His argument about illegitimacy is like a confession,” Abrams said.
“He doesn’t live in Alabama, and he’s being challenged for that weakness.”
According to the Alabama Reflector, two people have said the U.S.
Senator doesn’t meet the Alabama Constitution’s seven-year residency requirement to be governor and have filed an appeal to challenge a lower court’s decision to drop their case.
Abrams said Tuberville’s repeating MAGA ideas showed his desperation to stay close to Trump.
She then encouraged voters to take action.
“What we do is make sure that someone like Tommy Tuberville doesn’t move from the Senate to becoming the governor of Alabama,” she said.
“We can’t let them take away our trust in our democracy.”
