Donald Trump’s escalating fight with the American press took another unusual turn Sunday when the president shared an AI-generated image mocking the three news organizations he recently banned from the White House.
The image, posted to Trump’s Truth Social account, depicts the White House with three enormous, overflowing black trash bags sitting outside.
Each bag carries the logo of one of the targeted news organizations: CNN, Politico and MS NOW.
The MS NOW bag notably appears to use the network’s former MSNBC branding.
The post came just days after Trump announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned from the White House, accusing the outlets of publishing “fake news” and what he described as “fiction and lies.”
But this wasn’t merely another social-media feud.
By Saturday morning, the consequences had become very real.
Journalists representing all three organizations said they were prevented from entering the White House grounds. MS NOW White House reporter Akayla Gardner said her credential produced a red light when she attempted to scan it, after which an officer took the badge.
CNN senior White House reporter Betsy Klein also reported being denied access, while Politico said White House reporter Cheyenne Haslett suffered the same fate.
Reuters reported that press passes belonging to journalists from all three organizations were confiscated.
CNN called the decision an “illegal assault” on its constitutional rights, while MS NOW and Politico said they intended to defend their First Amendment rights.
Trump, however, has shown no indication that he intends to back away from the confrontation.
Instead, Sunday’s AI image appears to double down on it.
The controversy has even produced criticism from some conservative media figures.
Fox News veteran Brit Hume responded to criticism of the ban by warning that if Trump believes restricting access will produce friendlier coverage, “I think he’s dreaming.”
There is also precedent for a legal fight.
During Trump’s first term, his administration attempted to revoke CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s White House credential. A federal judge subsequently ordered the White House to restore it.
Trump has also suggested that CNN, Politico and MS NOW might not be the end of the story.
When he initially announced the bans, the president warned that “other” news organizations could follow. Asked later about other outlets, Trump criticized The New York Times and The Washington Post, although he did not explicitly announce bans against either publication.
For now, however, Trump has taken his confrontation with three major American news organizations into a distinctly 2026 arena: AI-generated political imagery.
And the message of the image was anything but subtle.
