Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was standing behind a podium in Toronto when his prepared remarks suddenly hit a snag.
And instead of getting frustrated, Carney saw an opening.
“I would like to inform you that the teleprompter has ceased to function,” he told the crowd.
He paused.
Then came the line.

“Unlike a certain world leader, I do not view this as a conspiracy.”
That was all it took.
Laughter immediately broke out around him. Carney cracked a smile, while the man standing behind him could be seen laughing along with the crowd.
Carney never said Donald Trump’s name.
He didn’t have to.
Reuters reported the remark as a clear jab at Trump, whose own battles with malfunctioning teleprompters have become part of his political appearances.
The reference goes back most notably to Trump’s appearance before the United Nations General Assembly, where he encountered a series of technical problems — including a teleprompter that wasn’t working properly and an escalator that stopped as he and First Lady Melania Trump were riding it.
Trump didn’t simply shrug the incidents off.
He later described what happened as “triple sabotage” and called for an investigation into the mishaps.
That history is what made Carney’s line land.
When his own teleprompter failed, the Canadian prime minister turned the malfunction into a setup — and delivered the punchline without ever identifying its target.
The crowd clearly understood.
It also wasn’t the first time Carney had flirted with making exactly this joke. After another teleprompter problem at an event earlier in his tenure, he remarked that there was a conspiracy-theory joke he could make.
This time, he made it.
The exchange was brief. There was no long attack on Trump and no extended political rant.
Just one malfunctioning screen, one carefully timed sentence — and a room full of people who knew exactly who the “certain world leader” was supposed to be.
And judging by the laughter, Carney didn’t need to explain it.
