Joe Scarborough, the host of MS NOW and a former Republican lawmaker, strongly criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday. He accused Johnson of being hypocritical after Johnson claimed that Democrats were trying to “steal” elections.
The argument started when Johnson appeared on Fox Business’s “Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo.” According to a clip shared by The Bulwark, an anti-Trump outlet, Johnson described the election battle in a very partisan way.
Johnson said, “We can’t allow big blue states and crooked Democrat governors to try to steal elections away from us.”
Scarborough responded harshly, telling Johnson to stop lying and not embarrass himself.
He then pointed out Johnson’s own situation, highlighting the speaker’s inconsistent stance.
“You were fine becoming Speaker with the help of California congressmen elected the same way,” Scarborough said, before challenging Johnson: “Will you surrender the Speaker’s gavel and not allow California Republicans to be seated in January?”
He ended with a dismissive remark: “I didn’t think so.”
This disagreement happens as tensions rise over how elections are run and how districts are drawn.
Both parties accuse each other of trying to change the electoral map before the November midterms.Johnson’s comments, made during a segment about the defense budget, show how Republican leaders are becoming more aggressive toward Democratic states.
For Scarborough, a former Republican congressman who now criticizes the party’s direction, Johnson’s remarks gave him a chance to point out what he sees as a clear contradiction in the official stance.
