MAGA really stirred up a big problem with their gerrymandering tactics.
“Virginia House Democrats have taken important steps to protect our democracy and stand against Republicans trying to take more power,” said Heather Williams, President of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.
“They know Republicans are still trying to find ways to take over seats and steal elections,” she added.
“The battle over redistricting will be won or lost in the state legislatures. To secure our democracy, Democrats need to win more majorities, and the DLCC’s 2026 map shows how we can make progress and protect our democracy.”
Politico called the Democratic plan a way to “take away many GOP seats.
” Right now, Virginia has six Democrats in Congress and five Republicans. If this redistricting works, three or four of those seats could shift to Democrats.
This is the second time the amendment has passed, and it will now go to the Democratically-controlled Senate for a vote.
If it gets approved there, it will then be voted on by Virginia voters, probably making the new map take effect before the important midterms in November.
The amendment allows the state legislature to redraw the map if another state does mid-decade redistricting for reasons other than a court order or the census.
Since Republicans are currently trying to give Trump more seats to increase his power, this amendment could be activated.
“Donald Trump hasn’t stopped fighting in this redistricting war he created,” said John Bisognano, President of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee.
Trump started this redistricting battle by pushing Texas Republicans to gerrymander their state and weaken the votes of Black and Latino voters to strengthen his own power in Congress.
Now, he’s facing the consequences of his actions.
