Former President Barack Obama took a pointed swipe at Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during a campaign rally in Cleveland, Ohio, questioning the Pentagon chief’s priorities before delivering a joke about how much time he spends admiring himself in the mirror.
Speaking on October 24 in support of Democratic Senate candidate Sherrod Brown and gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, Obama criticized President Donald Trump’s handling of the war with Iran before turning his attention to Hegseth.
Obama argued that the administration’s military decisions had contributed to rising energy costs and placed American service members at risk. He then contrasted those concerns with Hegseth’s public emphasis on physical appearance and masculinity within the armed forces.
The former president sarcastically suggested that the defense secretary was concentrating on matters such as troops’ jawlines and testosterone levels.
Then came the punchline.
“How much time do you think this defense secretary spends looking at himself in the mirror in the morning?” Obama asked, drawing laughter from the audience.
The joke was part of a broader criticism of Hegseth’s leadership, rather than simply a comment about his appearance.
Hegseth has repeatedly emphasized physical fitness, military standards and what he describes as a renewed warrior culture. His approach has included attention to testosterone levels and physical requirements for service members.
Obama portrayed those priorities as misplaced amid the continuing conflict with Iran, arguing that the administration was failing to address more pressing national security and economic concerns.
The former president also mocked Hegseth’s carefully styled appearance before questioning the seriousness of the administration’s leadership.
The remarks circulated on social media, where users offered sharply different reactions.
Some applauded Obama’s criticism, with one commenter writing, “Spot on, President Obama!”
Others defended Hegseth or questioned why Obama had focused on his appearance. One commenter responded, “Not as much as Newsom,” referring to California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Another called Obama’s remark strange, while a Hegseth supporter praised the defense secretary as a patriot and leader.
The disagreement reflected the broader political divide surrounding Hegseth, whose leadership of the Pentagon has become a frequent target of criticism from Democrats.
Obama’s appearance in Cleveland was part of his return to the campaign trail ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Throughout his remarks, he criticized Trump’s economic policies, foreign policy decisions and approach to governing.
His comments about Hegseth combined humor with a more serious argument about leadership during wartime, using a joke about a mirror to question whether the Pentagon was concentrating on the right priorities.
