Donald Trump was attacking Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar during a campaign rally in Daytona Beach, Florida, on Friday night when his remarks took an unexpected turn: the president began explaining why he had never married either of his sisters.
The moment came roughly 30 minutes into Trump’s speech, as he repeated an unsubstantiated allegation that Omar had married her brother.
Trump claimed that someone had once asked him whether he had married his own sister.
“You know, they asked me that question early in my political campaign, have you ever married your sister?” he told the crowd.
“You know what I said? No. I said, no, I haven’t. I swear, I swear. I did not marry my sister.”
Instead of leaving it there, Trump continued talking about his siblings.
“Lovely, I have two — I had two lovely — I have one left, Elizabeth. She’s great. But I have not, I never proposed to them.”
Then came the line that drew particular attention.
“I was never — they’re beautiful, but I was never particularly attracted to either of them. It’s not my deal.”
Trump’s surviving sister is Elizabeth Trump Grau. His older sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, a former federal appeals court judge, died in 2023.
The president’s remarks were not an entirely random diversion. He had been discussing Omar, the Minnesota Democrat who has long been the target of a conspiracy theory alleging that she married her brother.
Omar has repeatedly denied that accusation, and it has not been substantiated.
During the rally, Trump repeated claims about Omar’s name and former marriage, then argued that she should resign from Congress. His assertions were presented without evidence establishing the underlying allegation.
The comparison to his own family, however, produced a particularly unusual moment.
After assuring supporters that he had never married his sister, Trump proceeded to describe his sisters as beautiful and explain that he had never been especially attracted to either of them.
Footage of the exchange circulated online, with critics focusing on both the unexpected family discussion and the president’s delivery.
Some reports also drew attention to an unusual vocal sound during the remarks. The footage does not establish what caused it, and the incident provides no basis for a medical diagnosis.
The episode was part of a longer campaign speech in which Trump urged Floridians to support Republican candidates in the November 3 midterm elections.
He also repeatedly attacked Democratic politicians, including Omar, as he made his case for Republican control of Congress.
But the passage about his sisters became a separate talking point after the rally.
What began as another attack on a Democratic lawmaker had turned into an extended explanation about the president’s own family — one that was captured on camera and left viewers debating why he had chosen those particular words.
