The name of Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word “Ontari’io,” which means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is great,” Carney wrote on X in French.
“This name has been around for more than 400 years, long before Canada became a country and the United States declared its independence,” he continued.
“We know the United States is changing.
Their trade deals, their foreign policies, their national monuments, and the names of their water bodies,” Carney added.”Canadian men and women also understand that things should be called what they really are, and this lake is called Lake Ontario – then, now, and always.”
As always, Carney hit the perfect mix of confidence and calm.
He also dropped a nice little joke with the word “hydronyms,” because there’s no way Trump knows what that means.It means the names of bodies of water, so Carney is also pointing out Trump’s silly attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
This whole story is a clear attempt by Trump to distract from his failed Iran war and our shaky economy.
He can’t pass any laws because he doesn’t have the energy to create any, so he’s just drawing on maps with a Sharpie.
Carney is right that Canadians will keep calling it Lake Ontario, and so will most Americans.
Only the most extreme MAGA supporters are behind this crazy idea, and Trump can’t control what people say.When the next Democratic president takes office, they can undo this nonsense with just one stroke of a pen.
