Donald Trump surprised reporters on Monday with a crazy, confusing speech about considering military action against Iran.He said he wants to give the country “every last chance before decapitation” before a big, destructive attack that he claims is already planned and ready to go.
In a long history of saying strange things from the Resolute Desk, this one is really extreme.
When asked about future talks, Trump’s reply didn’t sound like a serious discussion about the current situation.Instead, it felt more like a made-up storyline from a bad action movie.
He said, “I want to give them every last chance before decapitation.” Then he claimed the U.S.
was ready to launch a huge attack the night before, which would have left “essentially very little left… nothing left.”
According to Trump, the reason the attack didn’t happen was because “sleazebag” leakers told Iran about the plan.
This caused Iranian leaders to call him in a panic and beg for another chance to negotiate.
“They knew I was coming… So they called me, and they said, ‘Please don’t attack.
We’ll make a deal.’ That’s the real truth, and everyone knows it.”
The real truth indeed.
But Trump hadn’t even finished talking before he criticized the leakers, saying they “should be put in jail.” Then he immediately praised them for supposedly saving Iran from total destruction.
This is all pure fantasy.
Trump is stuck, with no good options left, and is using his usual tricks: making up a story where he was about to deliver a big attack, claiming the other side was scared into submission, and portraying himself as both tough and a peacemaker.
Sane leaders always speak carefully about the possibility of war.
Trump, however, used words like “decapitation” and “total annihilation,” while spinning a story that makes him seem both merciful and unstoppable.
This isn’t strategic.
It’s Donald Trump wildly improvising because he’s cornered, and tossing around the idea of war crimes as threats.
