“If I see a reconciliation bill come from the House that tries to mess with this election again, I’ll do everything I can to slow things down until people realize what’s going on and start thinking clearly,” Tillis said, talking about Trump’s “SAVE America Act,” a law that tries to stop people from voting in a tricky way.
Trump knows he can’t win the midterms fairly because his time in office has been a disaster, so he’s making the SAVE Act his main focus.
He even refused to sign a popular bill about housing that both parties agree on, just to show he’s upset with Congress for not passing the SAVE Act.
Right now, the House is talking about a group of laws that include some parts of the SAVE Act, even though the Senate has refused to pass the whole thing before.
Tillis said it would be almost impossible to put all the SAVE Act rules into place if Congress did pass the bill, because the November elections are coming up soon.
There’s just not enough time to do it right.Trump doesn’t have much time left to make big changes like he wants.
To make sure the other Republican senators in the room understand, Tillis used a whiteboard to list all the government groups that would need to be involved in these voting changes, like voter ID laws.
It was a long list and looked complicated.
“I’ve been trying to explain for almost a year that the SAVE Act, whether it’s called the SAVE Act, the SAVE America Act, or the new one being talked about in the House, all of them are broken and can’t be done by the time of the election,” Tillis said angrily.
He said rushing to put these new rules in place quickly and carelessly would hurt people’s trust in the election process.
That’s exactly what Trump wants. He wants to create as much confusion as possible in the midterms so that when his party loses, he can say the results aren’t fair.
“Let’s stop the fake show and the distractions,” Tillis said.
“Let’s get the government funded, use reconciliation if we need to, but let’s not block the real work we need to do before the election with another law that comes from a senator or the White House and messes things up.”
