Newsom said at a press conference, “The President might not know, because he didn’t take the time to sign the bill, what we were trying to push for, and by the way, check out that federal housing bill. “It looks a lot like what we’ve been doing in California.”
The governor made these comments while signing a new housing bill for his state, once again showing he’s not afraid to take action on issues where Trump has messed things up badly.
Newsom simply said that California needs to “build more damn housing.”
He explained, “We’re making things easier by cutting through red tape, setting up a simple one-stop process for financing, focusing on real responsibility at the local level, holding the state accountable with major changes in land use, and speeding up development reforms.”
At the same time, Trump refused to sign a federal housing bill meant to lower costs, reduce rules, and create more homes because Congress hasn’t passed his harsh voter suppression law.
Also, he personally opposes lowering housing prices because his close allies own many rental properties, and lower prices would hurt them financially.
Housing shouldn’t be a place for speculation.
It’s a basic human right, and our officials should do everything possible to make sure working-class people can achieve the American Dream without getting into huge debt.
Good news: the housing bill automatically became law over the weekend without Trump’s signature.
Importantly, Republicans can’t use the bill’s passage as a political win, since their own leader didn’t back it.
“And I wasn’t joking when I said, ‘Looks a lot like California.’ Which might be one of the reasons Trump didn’t sign it,” Newsom added.
“But I thought there was a lot of good thinking and smart work in that bill.”
As usual, we see Democrats focusing on real problems while the MAGA-aligned Republican Party keeps taking from the public, starting unnecessary wars, and covering up sex trafficking scandals.
