A U.S.Senator came under fire on Sunday for allegedly losing touch with reality after he repeatedly said, without any proof, that Democrats were behind a white supremacist protest in Washington D.C.on Independence Day.
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) shared several posts on X showing members of the Patriot Front, who wore white masks and held Confederate flags, as they walked through the nation’s capital on Saturday.
In one post, Lee wrote, “Democrats need to stop reminding America of their racist history.” He also said, “Patriot Front: Brought to you by leftists who don’t know that patriots don’t wear masks.”
Lee wasn’t the only conservative making this claim.
Fox News host Laura Ingraham suggested a similar idea on Saturday in a response to video showing the group at the Washington Monument.
She wrote, “I call fake.” She added, “Looks more like Antifa in costume.
No one should be allowed to cover their faces.”
Adam Kinzinger, a former GOP U.S.
House member from Illinois, replied, “That’s the only defense you have to this?How about condemning it?”
As Ingraham made her comment, Lee received a lot of criticism.
Political commentator Robert Elisberg said he was worried Lee might truly believe his own words.
“He ACTUALLY SEES something on the far right which he can tell is deeply bad (so horrible he feels the need to blame it on others),” Elisberg wrote.
“Yet he’s unwilling to acknowledge and condemn that this racist hatred in his party exists.”
Attorney Steven Brown responded with dark humor, saying, “Mike Lee thinks ICE isn’t patriotic because they wear masks confirmed.”
Former CNN White House correspondent John Harwood simply said, “This United States senator is stark raving mad.”
