A new report from MS NOW shows that Republican lawmakers are finally finding the courage to distance themselves from Donald Trump as his poll numbers fall and his most controversial plans become serious problems.
In the past week, Republicans have cut $1 billion in security improvements, which includes $220 million for Trump’s fancy new East Wing ballroom/bunker, moved closer to ending his war with Iran, and called off a vote for an extra $72 billion in immigration funding.
The turning point seems to be Trump’s very unpopular $1.8 billion “slush fund” meant to pay January 6 rioters and other supporters who say they were wronged by the Biden Justice Department.
A former official from Trump’s administration stated clearly: “Republicans have realized they are being scammed, and this is the week they said enough. I can’t see any Republican ever allowing money to be paid to anyone who hurt law enforcement.”
With the midterm elections approaching, another House Republican openly said: “A freaking disaster is coming.”
As Trump’s approval rating drops to 37 percent and gas prices stay around $4.50 a gallon, Republicans are getting more worried about their future.
Several members mentioned that Trump is “pushing it too far” with his constant changes on Iran, treating Taiwan like a bargaining tool, and demanding total loyalty while pulling the party down with him.
The change in their attitude is clear.
A source close to the White House confessed: “In many ways, I don’t think they [Republicans] fear the president anymore. Many have realized you can outlast Trump in politics.”
After years of supporting Trump’s worst ideas, Republicans are waking up to the reality that blind loyalty to his dangerous policies could cost them their positions.
The reports suggest that the Cult of Trump is starting to crack under the pressure of his reckless decisions and bad polling numbers.
Let’s hope that once free from his influence, Republicans will choose to remove him from office after a midterm disaster sways the political balance back to the Democrats.
