Summer Lee has officially filed articles of impeachment against Pam Bondi, accusing the country’s highest law enforcement official of misusing her power and not following the law.
Speaking to a journalist, Lee confirmed her intentions bluntly:
“That’s the plan,”she said when asked about impeachment efforts. She went on to allege that Bondi had used the Department of Justice “as her own little pulpit to exact revenge on Trump’s enemies” and to benefit allies of Donald Trump.
The impeachment papers, submitted in Washington, D.C., list several alleged wrongdoings, such as ignoring congressional subpoenas, not following the Epstein Files Transparency Act, not obeying federal court orders, and lying under oath during congressional hearings.
Lee, who is on the House Oversight Committee, has previously worked to get full, unredacted files about the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
According to her office, the Department of Justice has been legally required to release those documents since August 2025 but has not complied.
“The AttorneyGeneral of the United States is entrusted with one of the most solemn responsibilities in our democracy,” Lee said in a statement. “Instead, Pam Bondi is breaking the law… This is about accountability, transparency, and justice.”
The articles further accuse Bondi of politicizing the Justice Department by targeting political opponents, dismissing cases involving Trump and his allies, and removing careerofficials within federal lawenforcementagencies.
LegaladvocacyorganizationFreeSpeech For People, which collaborated on drafting the impeachment articles, said the move was necessary to protect the integrity of the justice system.
“An Attorney General who defies Congress, disregards federal law, and misleads the courts cannot remain in office,” said Legal Director Courtney Hostetler.
Several Democraticlawmakers have joined as co-sponsors, signaling growing support within the party for holding Bondi accountable.
Lee also accused Bondi of being in contempt of Congress and defying lawful subpoenas, stating, “The DOJ does not serve the president… they should be seeking justice even-handedly. She is not capable of doing that.”
The impeachment process is likely to run into major political challenges in a split Congress, where getting rid of someone would need support from both major parties.
Rep. Yassamin Ansari described the situation as “one of the most egregious cover-ups in American history,” while Rep. Valerie Foushee said the Justice Department had “lost the trust of the American people.”
If this case moves forward, it could push the limits of what Congress can do to oversee the government and add more tension around the Justice Department’s independence.
