In a tense conversation before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Gen. Randy A. George, the top Army leader, avoided answering Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s question about whether he would tell the committee if the Army was ordered to do something he or his legal team thought was against the law.
Warren asked, “Will you promise to let this committee know if SOUTHCOM is told to do something that you or your legal advisors think is illegal?”
But George replied, “If I told this committee, Senator, it would be through my chain of command.”
Warren responded strongly, “And you wouldn’t take responsibility for making sure the committee got that information?
Do you understand that Congress has the duty to oversee these things?”
George stuck to his answer: “I would handle that information through my chain of command.
“
Warren reacted angrily, “That’s a really worrying answer.
Right now, things are very dangerous. We need our military leaders to stand firm in following the law and speak up when they’re asked to break it. And Congress needs to step in and check on this lawless commander-in-chief and his so-called Secretary of War.”
This moment is a big warning sign.
A top general refuses to promise to directly report possible illegal orders to Congress, while Trump and the Pentagon’s war continues and might push them toward illegal actions for political reasons.
It’s a cover-up happening right in the open.
Like and share if you think Trump is undermining the nonpartisan military with his tough talk and noise is really concerning.
