Right now, things are really tough. Kelly told the BBC, “I don’t know if I’m the best person for this job.” He said he’s quite different from most of the other 100 senators. He’s one of the few engineers in the Senate and the only one with a graduate degree in engineering in the whole U.S. Senate. He also has combat experience, which is pretty rare. He spent 25 years in the military.
Kelly is also a former astronaut, a devoted husband, and a strong supporter of American democracy.
He added, “I didn’t start out in some state legislature somewhere. I don’t really see myself as a politician.” He said it’s a big decision and he hasn’t made it yet.
Kelly has been a rising star in the Democratic Party since he became a senator.
But in recent months, his star has really shone brighter because of his public clashes with the Trump administration. Hegseth tried to demote him after he joined five other senators to release a video asking American troops to ignore illegal orders. That effort didn’t last long and fell apart in court.
Trump’s lawless prosecutors at the Justice Department, led by the former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, even tried to charge Kelly and the other Democratic lawmakers over the video.
But a grand jury said no law was broken.
Kelly believes Trump will keep targeting him even after these setbacks.
He said, “This isn’t going to end by me stepping aside. I’ll keep fighting this, even if it goes all the way to the Supreme Court.”
Whether or not Kelly is your top choice for the Democratic nomination, there’s no doubt he would do a much better job than Trump or JD Vance.
Picture the satisfying payback Kelly could get from the Oval Office. He could use the presidency’s power not to punish political enemies on a whim, but to make sure the law is followed and that the criminals in the MAGA administration are held responsible for their actions.
