The Hollywood Reporter says that Kimmel’s monologue from last night might end up being his most-watched ever, which is tough news for conservative TV stations like Sinclair that refused to show the show. They chose to support Donald Trump and now they’re facing the results of that choice.
So far, the show’s official YouTube channel has gotten 13,086,809 views in just 13 hours.
Kimmel’s previous most-watched monologue was eight years ago when he talked about his son’s birth and health issues. That one has 14 million views. This new video is likely to beat that number by the end of the day.
CNN’s Harry Enten noted that the average number of views for one of Kimmel’s YouTube videos is around 240,000.
This is a huge success.
Although official Nielsen ratings for TV viewership haven’t been released yet, signs suggest they will be much higher than the usual 1.6 million viewers Kimmel gets.
The show has received widespread praise, except from MAGA supporters who are very upset.
Kimmel thanked people who supported him and defended free speech during his suspension. He also strongly criticized Donald Trump and MAGA, as well as FCC Chair Brendan Carr.
He called Carr “Trump’s hitman” and said his actions are “not legal” and “un-American.”
“President Trump made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs,” said Kimmel.
“Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke,” he said.
“He was somehow able to get Colbert fired from CBS. Then he turned his sights on me and now he’s openly rooting for NBC to fire Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and the hundreds of Americans who work for their shows who don’t make millions of dollars.”
“If we don’t have free speech, then we just don’t have a free country.
It’s as simple as that. If this most fundamental right is allowed to perish, then the rest of our rights and liberties will fall, one by one, like dominoes,” he added.
