Trump posted on Truth Social that, using his authority as Commander-in-Chief, the Secretary of War ordered a deadly attack on a ship linked to a terrorist group involved in drug smuggling near Venezuela, within the USSOUTHCOM area. He said intelligence confirmed the ship was moving narcotics and was connected to illegal drug networks, and it was traveling along a known route used by such groups.
The attack happened in international waters, and six men on the ship were killed. No U.S. soldiers were hurt. He thanked people for paying attention.
Like before, Trump didn’t show any proof that the people killed were actually drug traffickers.
We don’t know for sure if they were innocent people trying to escape hardship or even fishermen trying to feed their families.
But in Trump’s world, the truth doesn’t matter.
He uses these attacks to distract from his poor handling of domestic issues and the weak economy. At the same time, he presents himself as a strong leader to his supporters and gets closer to a possible war with Venezuela, which is a goal for the military and people who want more conflict, like Marco Rubio.
These attacks also amount to state-sanctioned terror.
By showing the world he is killing people in the Caribbean, he wants to scare migrants away.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has asked for an investigation into these attacks, saying previous victims weren’t part of the Tren De Aragua gang as claimed by the White House, but were just poor young people from Latin America with no other options.
When Democrats get back in power, they should look into all the records of these attacks to see if there’s any reason to charge Trump and his allies.
If so, they need to act quickly to make sure justice is served.
