Today is the day when all the evangelicals get to show just how much they can tolerate being irrelevant, disrespectful, and openly dismissive of their own religion — all for the sake of their leader, and it’s more than they’re willing to accept, even though they often complain about seeing pride flags or other things they don’t like.
Donald Trump made sure to embarrass and look down on the so-called “Christians” at today’s Prayer Breakfast, especially his soon-to-be ex-House Speaker, Mike Johnson, whom he mocked for trying to say grace.
Trump said, “Mike Johnson is a very religious person.
He doesn’t hide it. He will sometimes say to me at lunch, ‘Sir, may we pray.’ I’ll say, ‘Excuse me? We’re having lunch.'”
The thought of being religious or saying grace is so foreign to Trump that he can’t even recognize it without making fun of it.
But that wasn’t all.
During his speech, Trump quoted an evangelical pastor who justified his lack of religious beliefs as a trade-off for achieving their political goals.
“He may not have ever read the Bible, but he will be a much stronger messenger for us!”
Trump smiled, without making sure the crowd that he had actually read the Bible (because he hasn’t).
This is the cynical hypocrisy of the religious right.
They are happy to ride with the devil himself if it means getting their way — like reversing women’s rights, pushing the LGBTQ community back into the closet, and enforcing white supremacy across the country.
Their behavior is truly disgusting, and Trump takes pleasure in making it clear how much he enjoys showing them up.
