So, folks, get ready for something big. For the first time since 1991, a Democrat is going to represent the suburbs of Fort Worth, Texas.
Taylor Rehmet, a union leader, beat Republican Leigh Wambsganss in the race for Texas state Senate seat 9.
Rehmet got 57.2% of the vote in a district that voted for Donald Trump by more than 17 points in 2024.
Just how big was this win?
Well, Rehmet won the town of “White Settlement” by 9 points.
This surprising result is a major blow to Donald Trump, who personally stepped in to ask Republicans to support Wambsganss.
The GOP as a whole also took a hit. Wambsganss spent over $2 million on the race, while Rehmet spent less than $200,000, and still lost.
Texas Democratic Party Chairman Kendall Scudder said in a statement after the November race: “When a grassroots union organizer like Taylor Rehmet overperforms by almost 20 points and forces a runoff, it couldn’t be any clearer that voters are tired of Republican nonsense.”
This is huge news for November.
Election analyst @ElxMapping writes on Twitter: “To put this upset in Tarrant County into perspective: if Democrats overperformed statewide in November the way Taylor Rehmet did tonight, the GOP’s gerrymander would actually backfire—and Democrats would net 3 House seats in Texas.”
That’s music to our ears!
Let’s keep organizing and work to turn this whole country blue!
