Ranking Member Jim Himes (D-CT) from the House Intelligence Committee recently made a strong statement after getting a private briefing about the U.S.-Israel attacks on Iran, which was part of the “Gang of Eight” group of top lawmakers. Himes said everything he has heard from the administration—both before and after the attacks—proves this is a “war of choice” with no clear goal or end in sight.
He said, “Military actions in this area rarely end well for the U.S.” and warned that a conflict with Iran could quickly get out of control in ways we can’t predict.
He added, “It doesn’t seem like Donald Trump has learned from past mistakes.”
He also mentioned the Constitution: “The President’s own words say this is a war, so the Constitution says the administration should ask Congress for permission, which they haven’t done.
Next week, the House will vote on a war powers resolution, and I will back that.”
This is serious and not unexpected.
A top intelligence committee member with access to secret briefings is now openly saying that Trump has started a dangerous, endless war without Congressional approval or a clear plan. The attacks could lead to big escalations in a already unstable area, American soldiers and civilians getting hurt, and years of turmoil, all without a clear strategy or proper authorization.
Like everyone else, Himes is worried about the people risking their lives.
The administration should be explaining why they’re pulling the U.S. into another long, never-ending war. Instead, Trump is ignoring Congress again and putting American lives in danger for his own goals.
