Leo told union officials during their visit to the Vatican, “While it’s important to have good policies to keep communities safe, I want to encourage you to keep fighting for society to treat the most vulnerable people with respect and dignity.”
This meeting happened as Trump’s ICE is increasing its aggressive actions against minority groups, and he is also trying to use the National Guard to target political opponents in Illinois.
According to Fox 32 Chicago, Cardinal Blase Cupich, the city’s cardinal, joined the labor group on their trip to Rome.
Cupich said Leo was very familiar with what’s happening in Chicago. He also said the pope has clearly stated that migrants and the poor must be treated with dignity.
Cupich said, “I didn’t need to explain much to him because he already had a good understanding of the situation.”
Cupich also said Pope Leo asked American bishops to “speak with one voice” when supporting migrants.
“This has to be our main focus right now.
This is the most important issue right now. We can’t avoid it,” he said.
He added, “Leo wants bishops to speak up for undocumented people and others who are vulnerable to protect their dignity.
We all need to remember that we all share the same dignity as human beings.”
Earlier this week, Pope Leo released his first major document called “I Have Loved You.
” In it, he called on Catholics to fight against the root causes of poverty and to protect and care for migrants.
Leo wrote, “The Church, like a mother, supports those who are walking.
She knows that in every rejected migrant, it is Christ himself who is knocking at the door of the community.”
He also quoted his predecessor, Pope Francis, saying Christians should use four actions for migrants: “welcome, protect, promote, and integrate.
“
Leo wrote, “The Church, like a mother, supports those who are walking.
Where the world sees threats, she sees children; where walls are built, she builds bridges. She knows that her message of the Gospel is only believable if it is shown through closeness and welcome. And she knows that in every rejected migrant, it is Christ himself who is knocking at the door of the community.”
