Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) spoke strongly against President Donald Trump on Thursday, calling him a “senile old man” who started a “messy” war.
Murphy has been one of the loudest voices criticizing Trump’s actions in the conflict with Iran, which Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began on February 28 with an attack that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and many other top officials.
Since then, more than 1,300 Iranians have died in the bombings.
Iran has responded by attacking Israel, U.S. military bases in the area, and has effectively closed the important Strait of Hormuz, causing big problems in the oil market. So far, seven U.S. soldiers have been killed and many more have been injured.
On Thursday evening, CNN showed a clip of Murphy talking to reporters at the Capitol, where he criticized Trump.
This is the most incompetent, incoherent war America has fought in the last 100 years. And that’s saying a lot. This administration has no idea what they are doing. There is no viable war plan. They change their goals and their aims every single day.
I have great sympathy for our soldiers and our military leaders. They are being given directions by a senile old man who is losing his mind. And so, it’s no surprise that this war is going horribly.
He said oil prices have gone up to almost $100 a barrel since the war started, and gas prices have also gone up.
This week, Trump told oil ship owners to “show some guts” and to be brave by traveling through the very dangerous Strait of Hormuz.
At least 16 tankers and cargo ships have been hit since the war started on February 28.
Most of these attacks happened in the Strait of Hormuz, but some ships in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman have also been targeted.
