Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) said on Sunday that President Donald Trump should remove adviser Stephen Miller from his administration. Tillis called Miller a “big problem” who should leave the administration next, following Trump’s decision to fire DHS Secretary Kristi Noem last week.
During an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on State of the Union, Tillis criticized Miller.
He said he’s frustrated with how Miller has been leading Trump’s efforts to deal with illegal immigration. Tillis also criticized Miller for his comments about the shooting death of Alex Pretti and his push for the U.S. to take control of Greenland.
Tillis said, “It gives me pause that you have people like Stephen Miller calling the shots.”
He added, “It was Stephen Miller talking about a terrorist brandishing a gun, it was Stephen Miller who said the U.S. should go after Greenland, and it was Stephen Miller who has caused embarrassment for the president. He speaks first and thinks later.”
Tapper then asked, “Do you think Stephen Miller should go?”
“Of course I do,” Tillis replied.
“He’s not worried about substance.
He’s more worried about form,” Tillis continued. “But I also think he has a big influence over how the cabinet works. And I believe some qualified cabinet members aren’t doing what they should because of his direction and influence. He’s a big problem in this administration from the start.”
His strong words about Miller come shortly after Trump announced Noem’s time as head of the Department of Homeland Security was ending.
However, betting that Trump will listen to Tillis seems unlikely, since Miller has been one of Trump’s closest allies since his first term in office.
