Ohio Republican Senator Jon Husted acted in a very judgmental and superior way during a radio interview today. He looked down on Americans who use SNAP, which is the food stamp program, by saying they don’t understand basic life skills.
In a shocking moment, Husted talked about a “young lady” who supposedly said she didn’t know how to handle money at a grocery store because she has always used SNAP cards to buy food.
His attitude was smug, and he said, “You literally have to teach people how to budget.”
He then referred to “affordability” as just a buzzword, acting as if the real issue isn’t the huge rise in costs and the difficult job market under Trump, but that poor people aren’t smart enough to understand cash registers or manage their accounts.
This is a clear example of MAGA cruelty—a senator making fun of families who need food assistance to get by, while the Pentagon spends over $93 billion in one month on things like lobster tails, grand pianos, recliners, and ice cream machines.
Husted treats using SNAP as a personal failure rather than a necessary support system for millions of working people, veterans, disabled individuals, and children.
Right now, the country is dealing with serious challenges, but instead of addressing those issues, we’re lecturing a young woman on how to budget while the GOP administration wastes taxpayer money on luxury items, spending billions without any regard for the future.
If Husted’s out-of-touch and disrespectful attitude toward those less fortunate has you upset, like and share to call it out: Contempt for the poor is un-American.
