It’s official: The Supreme Court has ruled against Donald Trump’s tariff plan — and now California Governor Gavin Newsom wants Americans to get their money back, including interest.
After the Court’s 6–3 decision, Newsom said the Trump administration should immediately send refund checks to families and businesses that had to pay for tariffs the Court called illegal.
“Time to pay the piper, Donald,” Newsom said.
“Every dollar taken without permission must be returned immediately — with interest. Cough up!”
Newsom is making a simple point: if you take money from people illegally, you don’t get to keep it.
The ruling confirmed what California argued from the start — that Trump used emergency powers to put tariffs on goods without Congress’s approval.
The Court agreed: the president can’t just decide to put taxes on imports whenever he wants.
And here’s the thing — tariffs are really just taxes.
According to Newsom’s office, Trump’s tariffs collected more than $130 billion from importers, and those costs were passed on to consumers through higher prices for everyday items.
A Yale study found that the average family lost about $1,751 last year alone.
That’s groceries.
That’s rent. That’s gas.
California was the first state to sue over the tariffs, saying they were both harmful and against the Constitution.
Now, with the Supreme Court agreeing, Newsom is pushing harder. If the tariffs were wrong, then keeping the money was also wrong.
Now, the question isn’t whether Trump went too far — the Court already said he did.
The real question is whether he’ll give back the money to the American people… or try to avoid responsibility again.
Because when you take money from people without permission, saying “sorry” isn’t good enough.
