The House Speaker dropped a big clue today when he couldn’t—or wouldn’t—give even one example of the voter fraud that’s supposedly so dangerous to our democracy that we need to pass Trump’s SAVE (My Ass From The Midterms) bill. This bill would prevent millions of American voters, especially married women, from casting their ballots.
When asked about it, Johnson said, “Look, I’m not gonna litigate that,” and instead told reporters, “I can tell you what I’ll tell Democrats: you should listen to the American people.
Ostensibly, we’re supposed to come here and represent the interest of the American people. This is a 90-10 issue in public opinion polling, and Democrats agree that you should be a citizen and have a photo ID to vote, at a tune of about 70%.”
This is just a way to avoid the real issue.
No one is arguing that you shouldn’t have an ID to vote. The SAVE Act would stop people from using a driver’s license to vote, which would prevent millions of Americans who don’t have a passport or have changed their names since their birth certificates were issued from voting.
The fact that he couldn’t give even one example is all the proof we need to know that this isn’t about protecting democracy.
It’s all about trying to take back the midterms.
