The First Lady’s personal project and also Jeff Bezos’ $40 million payment to the Trump family, called “Melania,” is finally coming to theaters this week — and it’s not going well, as you might guess.
The movie, directed by Brett Ratner, who’s been accused of rape, had a $35 million marketing budget, but it’s not drawing much attention in the UK.
The Guardian says that UK ticket sales for “Melania” are “soft,” according to Tim Richards, the CEO of Vue, one of the country’s biggest cinema chains.
Just one ticket was sold for the first 3:10 pm screening on Friday at Vue’s main branch in Islington, London, and two were booked for the 6 pm showing.
At the time of the report, all seats were still available for the 28 screenings at the Blackburn, Castleford, and Hamilton branches.
Things were slightly better at Cineworld in Wandsworth, where four tickets were sold, and five backrow seats were booked at Cineworld in Broughton.
So far, that’s a total of 11 tickets sold.
Richards admitted he got a lot of public backlash for even showing the film, but he said, “We don’t play judge and jury when it comes to censoring movies.”
People are not expecting the film, which is almost certainly not real, to make much money.
It claims to show the 20 days before Trump came back to the presidency. Industry experts think that many theaters are being paid a fixed amount to show the movie instead of making money from ticket sales.
On Monday, Donald Trump said, “Tickets are SELLING OUT FAST!”
We can’t wait to see what Trump will do to try to save face from what looks like a big embarrassment.
Will he start a campaign asking an Oscar winner to give up their award to Melania? Or will he get upset about how Woke AMC Theaters is hurting the film? Only time will tell.
