“Donald Trump has made a mockery of the State of the Union speech – taking a moment that is meant to bring the country together and turning it into a campaign rally to spew hatred and division. Democrats have no obligation to reward him with an audience as he lies and attacks people who disagree with him,” stated Senator Chris Murphy.
“These aren’t normal times and showing up for this speech puts a veneer of legitimacy on the corruption and lawlessness that has defined his second term,” he added.
Trump’s speech, which you can safely assume will be a mix of lies, racism, fascism, and embarrassing moments from someone who’s struggling with memory issues, is scheduled for February 24th.
A Democratic rally called the “People’s State of the Union” will take place on the National Mall and will feature “everyday Americans who are most affected by Trump’s harmful policies.”
Several Democratic senators, including Murphy, will speak at the event, as well as members of Congress like Pramila Jayapal and Delia Ramirez.
Republicans on social media are already saying that Democrats should watch Trump’s speech out of “respect for the office.”
This is a silly claim, because Trump clearly doesn’t respect the presidency. Why should we give him the respect he denies to the entire country every day?
“Next week, Trump will deliver his State of the Union address.
I won’t be there. Trump is leading America toward fascism, and I refuse to accept his destruction of our Constitution and democracy. This cannot be business as usual,” Senator Chris Van Hollen wrote on X.
In addition, another counter-event called “State of the Swamp” will be held at the National Press Club and will include well-known opponents of Trump, like Congressman Eric Swalwell and Senator Ron Wyden.
This is exactly what Democrats should be doing.
We cannot treat Trump like a real president. He’s a dangerous autocrat and someone who may have harmful intentions, sending masked people to hurt people in our streets.
We already know the “state of our union” and under Donald Trump, it has never been worse.
