“From the very beginning, we’ve been clear: Democrats will support important Homeland Security functions, but we won’t give Trump’s illegal and dangerous immigration group a free pass without changes,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. “A 60-day continuing resolution that keeps things the same is not going to work in the Senate, and Republicans know that.”
Republicans want to pass the two-month bill to reduce political problems while they keep talking to Democrats about a full-year funding plan for ICE.
Meanwhile, Democrats are asking for big changes to stop the bad actions of Trump’s hidden military-style group.
Schumer’s decision that the temporary law won’t work comes after a big win for Democrats last night.
Senate Republicans gave in and agreed to fund the TSA, FEMA, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and the Coast Guard, but they left out the rest of DHS — especially ICE and Border Patrol.
House Republicans have already refused that plan, with Speaker Mike Johnson saying: “We’re not going along with that.”
“This plan that was approved last night is a joke,” he added.
“I’m pretty sure that not every Senate Republican read the language of this bill.”
In short, Republicans are okay with making life harder and more confusing for regular people just to fund groups that are hurting and killing innocent people without being held accountable.
Democrats can win this fight.
We need to stand firm and fight hard, knowing that history and the people’s support are on our side. Don’t give an inch!”
