Donald Trump wanted to personally shape his enormous new White House ballroom.
But when the architect working on the project reportedly warned him that some of those choices raised serious safety concerns, Trump’s response was remarkable:
“I am the code.”
That’s according to a new Washington Post investigation into the increasingly controversial ballroom project and the behind-the-scenes conflict between Trump and James McCrery II, the first architect hired to work on it.
The Post reports that McCrery repeatedly raised concerns about preliminary designs during the weeks before he left the project in October 2025.
And these weren’t arguments about chandeliers, columns or Trump’s well-known preference for ornate decoration.
They involved life safety.
According to people familiar with the discussions and documents reviewed by the Post, McCrery believed aspects of Trump’s preferred design did not provide adequate emergency exit routes and fire-containment protections.
One concern reportedly involved whether guests could evacuate quickly enough through the main entrance during an emergency.
Alternative exits were also considered insufficient in preliminary plans.
There were concerns about preventing a kitchen fire from rapidly spreading into the ballroom itself, according to the reporting.
Even the number of restrooms became an issue because the preliminary design reportedly did not provide enough for the building’s planned maximum occupancy.
McCrery repeatedly pushed back.
Trump reportedly did too.
When confronted with the building-code concerns, Trump asserted that ordinary building codes did not apply to White House construction, according to the Post.
Then came the line that may define the entire dispute:
“I am the code,” Trump reportedly said.
The details become even more striking because Trump wasn’t simply watching the project from the Oval Office.
Documents obtained by the Post reportedly show just how personally involved he became in the design.
Trump marked up architectural images with a black Sharpie, weighing in on everything from columns to other design details.
One image obtained by the newspaper reportedly shows a note for McCrery communicating Trump’s preference for ornate Corinthian-style columns over a simpler design.
But the safety disagreements appear to have been much more consequential.
Notes from a September 2025 White House meeting reviewing the project reportedly contained a stark assessment:
“Life safety — big concern.”
McCrery left the ballroom project the following month.
The White House disputes the suggestion that safety disagreements drove his departure.
A White House spokesman told the Post that aesthetics had never been prioritized over safety standards and said McCrery’s departure had nothing to do with building codes. The administration also says life-safety issues have been addressed and resolved as the ballroom design evolved.
McCrery himself did not cite the safety dispute in his statement about leaving the project.
That distinction matters.
The documents and accounts concern earlier designs, and the available reporting does not establish that the ballroom’s current design remains unsafe.
But the newly revealed dispute adds another layer to a project that was already engulfed in controversy.
Trump originally said taxpayers would not have to pay for the ballroom. But a contractor’s internal March estimate obtained by the Post put the broader construction project at approximately $600 million, with more than half of that estimate coming from taxpayer funds.
Trump has also increasingly defended the ballroom project on national-security grounds, describing the planned complex as a hardened facility capable of protecting presidents and guests.
That makes the newly reported internal warnings about basic fire and evacuation safety particularly notable.
A project being promoted as a secure new addition to America’s most famous government residence was, during its early design stages, generating enough concern that internal meeting notes reportedly described “life safety” as a “big concern.”
And when the architect reportedly tried to raise building-code concerns directly with the president?
Trump’s answer, according to the Post, was four words:
“I am the code.”
