Rep.Jamie Raskin didn’t hesitate when Kristen Welker asked him on Meet the Press this morning, “Do you believe that President Trump has committed impeachable offenses at this point?” Raskin answered confidently, “Undoubtedly,” and added, “We don’t have time to even start looking at it.” Then he started listing examples.
He pointed out that Trump went to war without Congress declaring war and accused him of repeatedly ignoring Congress’s power over how the government spends money.
Then he said something surprising.
“I would say even just bulldozing the East Wing of the White House,” Raskin said.
“If you can bulldoze the East Wing, you can bulldoze the West Wing.He believes that he is a king.”
From there, Raskin launched a strong attack on what he called the “plunder and corruption” in the Trump administration, saying the president and his family used political power to make money for themselves.
“Nothing comes close to the kind of plunder and corruption we’ve been seeing in this administration,” Raskin said.
“All of that could warrant an impeachment investigation if we wanted to do it.”
Raskin knows this subject well.
The Maryland congressman was the lead House impeachment manager in Trump’s second impeachment trial after January 6.
Raskin still believes impeachment is a “critical tool in the toolbox,” but he says that more urgent tasks are health care and what he called “ending the lawlessness.”
And Raskin is right not to see impeachment as the top priority for the upcoming Democratic majority.
There is a lot of damage to fix—like health care, the cost of living, congressional authority, and how the government works.
A new majority could easily waste its chance if it spends all its time re-litigating Donald Trump.
But fixing the damage from his administration also means dealing with the man Raskin says is responsible for so much of it.
