CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to put his name on public institutions during her show The Source on Thursday, August 13.
This came after the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees made a controversial decision to add a new inscription below the main sign at the historic performing arts venue, reading “Restored and Renovated by President Donald J.
Trump.” The board’s move was an attempt to find a way around a federal judge’s order that blocked renaming the center.
In May, U.S.
District Court Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the board had acted unlawfully when it first tried to change the name of the venue to “The Donald J.Trump and The John F.Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” The judge said only Congress has the power to change the center’s name.
The new inscription is currently hidden under tarps and under security watch.
Legal experts expect the situation to return to court.Democratic leaders have strongly condemned the board’s actions, calling them a lack of transparency and an abuse of power.
During her show, Collins pointed out that this situation reflects a bigger pattern of Trump trying to put his name on everything during his second term.
She said, “The president’s focus hasn’t just been on the Kennedy Center in terms of his broader push to remake Washington. It’s also his habit of branding everything with his name. That includes the gold coins, the Trump passports, the National Park passes, the Palm Beach airport — I’m not done — the banner at the Justice Department, the new class of battleships. There are many things, not just in Washington, but all across the nation now bearing the Trump name.”
Shawn McCreesh from The New York Times said that while these branding issues seem small on their own, taken together, they show an unusual focus on personal legacy over normal governance.
He said, “The Kennedy Center reminds me of the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial and how they kept trying all those cases that were going to fall apart.
These are technically small things that don’t affect tens of millions of people or global trade. It’s not an issue of war and peace. And yet the smallness of these incidents has a way of magnifying how strange the behavior of the Trump administration is.”
McCreesh added, “I think it’s very strange that a board of people who are loyal to him got together today and said, no, we are going to scrape your name on the wall after we’ve been told to take it off.
That’s very unique behavior.”
Collins agreed, saying, “‘Unique’ is a word for it.”
On Friday, August 14, the Trump administration filed an emergency petition asking the U.S.
Supreme Court to block a lower court order and allow construction to continue on his $400 million White House ballroom project.
The request follows an August 7 ruling by a divided panel of three judges from the U.S.
Court of Appeals for the D.C.Circuit, which ruled that Trump did not have the power to build the structure on federal land without clear approval from Congress.Government lawyers are asking the Supreme Court to step in before the court’s stop-work order takes effect on August 21.
