CNN’s Kaitlan Collins raised a question that many Americans are thinking about as Donald Trump gets ready to give another speech about the 2020 election:
“If he really has proof of crimes, why hasn’t anyone been charged?”
Trump has now been in the White House for over a year and a half.
Yet, as the White House frames tonight’s speech as a big new revelation, Collins pointed out a clear issue.
“Regarding the President’s speech tonight, he’s been in office for more than 540 days now,” Collins said.
“If what he says tonight is based on real evidence, why haven’t any charges been filed?”
Leavitt’s response created even more confusion.
“He hasn’t released the documents yet,” she said.
“You’ll see what he says tonight, and then we’ll take the next steps.”
Collins pressed further: “If that information is supported by evidence, will there be charges?” she asked.
Leavitt hesitated and finally had no choice but to say, “You’ll have to ask the Justice Department.
I don’t charge people.I just speak on behalf of the President.”
Here we have Trump preparing a prime-time White House speech centered on claims of election fraud.
His spokesperson says there’s evidence. But when asked whether that evidence is strong enough to support criminal charges, the White House is suddenly unable to provide an answer.
