Trump once praised Gen.Charles Q.Brown as a “patriot and great leader” when he named him to lead the Air Force.
Later, when Trump came back to power, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pushed to remove military leaders linked to “DEI woke stuff,” and Brown was let go within weeks.
Now, the retired chairman of the Joint Chiefs is speaking out.
In a strong new essay in Foreign Affairs, Brown warned that leaders who use the military to fix political issues are playing a risky game.
He wrote, “It’s not the military’s job to save the republic from political standoffs.”
“If you expect too much from the military, you risk everything the military stands for,” he said.
Brown didn’t mention Trump or Hegseth directly, but his message was clear.
He criticized using troops for politically divisive domestic tasks and argued that depending on the military to fix problems in civilian institutions ends up weakening both.
He also criticized the recent firing of top military officers, saying the moves weren’t based on merit and that many of those removed were among the most skilled and respected commanders.
This warning comes from the same general who Trump once highlighted as a trailblazer and personally promoted to the highest military position before quickly dismissing him.
General Brown, who usually speaks calmly and carefully, is sending a message to every American voter:
We need to reject any leader who uses our armed forces as a personal political weapon.
